We are a few hours away Pixel fold will be officially unveiled at Google I/O 2023. Mountain View’s first folding has already been officially seen in a small preview released in recent days; though now we’ve had the opportunity to see him in action in an ad with NBA stars.

While the announcement doesn’t just apply to the Pixel Fold, but to the Pixel family as a whole, it does focus on its capabilities. Of course, being an ad, everything works perfectly and like magic. It remains to be seen how the experience with the new smartphone carries over into real life.

The first thing to note about what you see on the Pixel Fold is that it includes features that we might already consider “common” among foldable mobile phones. For example can “split” the inner screen when it detects that it is open at a 90° angle; something especially useful during video calls or take selfie group. The function is similar to the Flex technology in the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Speaking of selfieGoogle’s announcement also shows that the Pixel Fold lets you take selfies with the rear camera instead of the front. In any case, the method does not seem to be the most practical, since open mobile must be used to preview the scene on the external screen.

Although the feature that attracts the most attention appears in the video one of the first and is associated with video calls. Apparently, Pixel Fold will allow you to initiate communication using an external screen and continue from within, without interruption when opening the device. It’s interesting, no doubt, but it’s one of the features that leaves the most doubt as to how similar the actual experience will be to the one shown in the ad.

Google also took the opportunity to highlight the use of already known software tools such as Magic eraser to remove unwanted objects from a photo, among other things. You can see the full announcement below.

Pixel Fold in the hands of NBA stars

That Google chose to feature the Pixel Fold in ads with NBA stars like Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo is no coincidence. Those from Mountain View are the sponsors playoffs the best basketball league in the world through its mobile line.

For that, we will have to wait for its official launch, which will take place this afternoon along with other Google products. What is really clear to see is that the bezels of the inner screen they are so bulky as valued in renders informal.

In terms of specifications, the Pixel Fold will have a 5.8-inch outer OLED screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen, also OLED. In both cases, they will offer a 120Hz refresh rate, and under the hood will be a Tensor G2 chip with a Titan M2 security co-processor, 12GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of storage.

The rear cameras will include a 48-megapixel primary sensor in addition to ultra-wide and telephoto, both 10.8 megapixels. The front camera will be 9.5 MP, while the internal camera will be 8 MP. There is still no news on the battery’s capacity, though the leak guarantees it will last more than 24 hours, or up to 72 hours in extreme power saving mode.

Though the questions that have yet to be answered about the Pixel Fold go beyond its spec sheet. The price, without a doubt, has generated the most comments in recent times.. According to Jon Prosser, the “basic” version with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage will cost $1799. While the variant with 512 GB of internal space would reach 1919 US dollars.
