In addition to the prospect of increasing bets on PC and mobile gaming, Sony revealed more about its inventory shortage today. For example, fewer PS5 consoles are currently being sold compared to the PS4 when it was one and a half years old. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan says it’s driven by supply, not demand.

For example, figures from the company show that at the end of March 2022 (end of fiscal year), the three major US retailers sold around 80,000 PS5 consoles in 82 minutes; that figure takes nine days for a PS4 of the same age. Therefore, although Sony cannot produce enough devices, there is great interest in the new generation.

To meet this high demand, the manufacturer plans to further increase production. Jim Ryan, in his presentation to investors, stated that a significant increase is planned that will allow for “never reached before” capacity. The PS5 is expected to surpass its predecessor in terms of sales in 2023. If all goes as planned, there will be more consoles sold than PS4 in 2024 – when it was three/four years old.

While Sony is taking various logistical measures to keep its supply chain as stable as possible, there are some factors that could be key. In the short term, both the quarantines in China and the war in Ukraine could cause disruptions to components and transport.
