Space tourism is expanding with companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. While this is happening, corresponding problems arise. One of them is sex from planet earththe consequences of which are still unknown and require an analytical approach.

David Cullen, Professor of Bioanalytical Technology at Cranfield University in England, points in this direction in an article published in Talk. “Companies not prepared for the consequences so that people can join what we might call the Karman Lines Club.“, – he notes. In aviation and astronautics, this line is the boundary between the earth’s atmosphere and outer space, located 100 kilometers from our planet.

Cullen says that people will inevitably have sex in space. A penchant that can already be seen in the so-called “Mile High Club”, whose members are known for their intimate relationships on board mid-flight aircraft.

Sex in space, uncharted activity

Alien scenarios are no longer exclusive to professional astronauts. Space tourism is growing thanks to companies offering trips beyond our planet. and interested parties willing to pay fortunes for these trips. Besides the aforementioned SpaceX and BlueOrigin, there are others. One of them is Virgin Galactic, owned by tycoon Richard Branson.

SpaceX, one of the new tourism companies, is it ready for sex in space?

“There is a good chance that the deployment of the sector will soon be followed by first intercourse outside of Earth“, – says a specialist from a British university. In addition, he predicts that sex in space will become a common practice in the next ten years.

The real concern is not closeness outside the home, but the consequences of this activity. According to Cullen, the following aspects will need to be considered.

  • Although space tourism does not allow pregnant passengers, cases where this status is hidden and/or unknown have not been considered.
  • We know that weightlessness changes our body. Meanwhile, research how it will affect the physiological processes of reproduction, sex in space and gestation.
  • Experiments with mice aboard satellites, cited by a bioanalyst expert, have shown changes in embryos.

“Knowledge on the effects on human reproduction is virtually zero. But it can be assumed that there will be effectsCullen says, noting that there is an unknown potential for anomalies if a human pregnancy develops off-Earth.

Space tourism faces the challenge of human sexuality

The development of the sector is turning into reality the science fiction arguments that predicted that space would become just another tourist destination among many. Parallel to the illusions – watching the globe from afar is mesmerizing – there are side effects that should be evaluated.

According to Cullen, sex in space with a possible long stay can lead to ectopic pregnancy caused by lack of gravity. We also don’t know for sure if the contraceptive methods used here on Earth will be effective in such scenarios.

“Our investigation found little evidence that the sector is taking steps to mitigate these risks. The space tourism industry and other stakeholders urgently need to come together. They should discuss these issues and formulate a strategy for protecting all participants, ”the specialist concludes.
