The 47.6°C that hit Spain in 2021 during the worst heat wave in the country’s history could be the average summer temperature. This was stated by Carlos del Castillo, one of the most important scientists at NASA. In his message to Chain BEnotes that the Iberian region there would be a climate more like Asian and Africanvery different from its European neighbors.
Del Castillo believes that during the next heatwaves, 50°C will become a reality for Spain. Although there are regions of the country that already reach these temperatures, for others it is a completely unknown area. However, for many years this number may start showing up more often.
“We continue to bake and the temperature will continue to rise,” commented Carlos del Castillo.
In addition to offering a glimpse of what’s in store for Spain during future heatwaves, also confirms the cause of these temperature rises. As usual, greenhouse gas emissions can be tracked. Although this number continues to grow, Del Castillo says that the number of thermometers will also increase.
Worst heatwaves and extreme weather for Spain if the forecast stays as it is.
According to a series of videos published by NASA, Europe, North America and Asia are the world’s largest producers of CO2. These high emissions affect not only the regions most absorbing these gases – the southern hemisphere of the planet. Except, they are a sentence for countries that produce it, such as Spain.
Del Castillo says that unless governments decide to drastically reduce emissions from fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), Rising temperatures could spell disaster in Spain. Not only will there be more intense heatwaves and higher average temperatures, but we will also see extreme weather events.
As water vapor increases as a result of heatwaves, rainfall can become more intense. However, during the coldest months of the year Spain could face similarly heavy and problematic snowfall.
The Spanish economy may face a challenge
In 2019, the World Travel and Tourism Council ranked Spain as the second most dependent country on tourism. For this reason, during the long lockdown experienced in 2020, the country’s economy has received a significant blow from which it continues to recover. However, according to NASA, it could happen again if the climate crisis continues in the same direction.
High temperatures in Spain already causing a decline in tourism in some sectors. Those nationalities that love the Iberian Peninsula more are already choosing more recent holiday destinations on the continent. Waves of increasingly intense heat or cold will only affect the inhabitants, as well as the country’s economy.
