And it is thanks to this great actor that scientists have helped restore the voice that he once had. Let’s remember that he suffered from cancer throat, which underwent a tracheotomy in 2014. Because of this, his voice was irreparably damaged.
But that’s exactly what these types of achievements are for, so that he can’t do without his mythical image, even if he does not have his main tool.
Behind all this is London technology company Sonanticwho teamed up with Kilmer to create the AI-generated actor voice that was eventually used in Top Gun: Maverick.
“From the very beginning, our goal was to create a voice model that Val could be proud of,” John Flynn, chief technology officer and co-founder of Sonantic, said in a blog post. “We really wanted to give her voice back by giving her a new tool for whatever creative project we have.”Add.
This artificially generated voice is completely synthetic and mimics old recordings of the actor. As for the process, the company recovered some of his recordings and used a voice engine to teach the generated model to speak like Kilmer.
Behind it, texts were introduced to him in order to gradually clear out impurities and leave an accurate voice.
“As human beings, the ability to communicate is at the core of our existence, and the effects of throat cancer make it difficult for others to understand me.”the actor explains. “Being able to tell your story in a voice that feels authentic and familiar is an incredibly special gift.”ends.
The company has already stated that thanks to this project and the creation of new algorithms, they can be used for other clients.
