According to the Reuters news agency, the EU parliament could make a decision already next Tuesday on plans for a USB-c charging standard for small and medium-sized electronics.
Recently, the plans have been voted on by EU members. 43 out of 45 members voted in favour. The plans only had to be approved by parliament.
According to Reuters, a number of issues need to be discussed, such as the plan to introduce a charging standard for laptops as well. EU members also want to standardize wireless charging before 2025, but this will take some more time for technical reasons, according to the EU Commission.
In the smartphone space, Apple will be particularly impacted by the regulation as it is the only major smartphone manufacturer that has yet to switch to USB-C. On laptops, Apple is one of the few that uses the USB-c port as a standard power supply. Laptops from other manufacturers usually have a USB-C connection, but the laptop cannot be charged with it.
