NASA has released a small 8-bit game called ‘Roman Space Observer’, the goal is to ‘capture’ as many exoplanets, galaxies, black holes and other objects as possible. The game is free to play in the browser. According to NASA, the goal is to “educate and inspire players about the wonderful objects in our universe.”

A ‘telescope’ can be moved across the screen with the arrow keys. Various cosmic objects can be captured by pressing the spacebar. Galaxies are relatively common, dark matter and black holes are more difficult to capture. Each game has a one minute playing time. The Rome Space Telescope is a NASA observatory designed to uncover the secrets of dark energy and dark matter, locate and image exoplanets, and explore many topics in infrared astrophysics. The Rome Space Telescope features a 2.4-metre telescope with a view the same size as Hubble’s but 100 times larger than Hubble’s.
