Nikkei Asia reports that Japan and the US have joined forces to balance the upcoming era of 2nm computer chips. Private companies from both countries will work together to provide a factory in Japan with the knowledge necessary to manufacture the advanced chips. Like TSMC, this partnership seeks to reveal the first 2nm chips from 2025.

TSMC, on the other hand, holds its trump card for now, as the Taiwanese company seems ready for the next process beforehand. The plan for Japan and the US is to be able to produce the first 2nm chips between 2025 and 2027 (fiscal year). With cooperation partially funded by the Japanese government, the Asian country is trying to secure the supply of semiconductors. Also in this way research and knowledge can be shared between the two countries.

On the other hand, precise information about the interested parties is not yet available. There is speculation that IBM, Intel and Samsung are involved, but there is no concrete reason for this. Therefore, it is doubtful whether Japan will be able to realize this plan in a relatively short time frame. The clock is ticking and TSMC says it’s on schedule.
