Anaergia, a Canadian company specializing in energy solutions from organic waste, will build a renewable energy plant. using biogas derived from cow dung in Kasaoka, a city in Japan, and thus generate electricity capable of feeding 2,200 homes a year.
The plant, which will be manufactured for Toyo Energy Solution, is also aimed at avoid around 13,500 tons of CO2 emissions from manure and other fossil fuels; which is equivalent to removing 2900 internal combustion vehicles from the roads per year. For this, about 250 tons of cow dung per day will be used, which will be converted into biogas capable of feeding a combined heat and power (CHP) system. Cow dung is also used in Spain for renewable energy production.
Benedek also stressed that he hopes to build more of these plants in the territory in order to produce more renewable energy and “Help Japan achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2050.”
Interestingly, this is not the first time cow dung has been used to produce renewable energy. In Spain, the litter of more than 2,000 cows from a farm in Lleida is used for supply Spain’s natural gas network with biomethanea gas generated “from biological waste, energy crops, sewage sludge, or domestic and industrial organic waste,” according to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Population Affairs.
