The United Kingdom announced a plan to build the first”highway for drones”. It’s called Skyway, and it’s going to be a route dedicated solely to small remote-controlled helicopters: in the near future, they’ll become increasingly important for shipments of medicines, basic necessities, and more.
The route connects the main cities of the UK for a total of 260 km. The idea is to maintain a route that must remain clear of the traffic of traditional air vehicles at a certain altitude. In this way, traditional air traffic should be able to coexist with that of drones, which will soon become more and more intense.
The Skyway Project will benefit from a new innovation financing package. An investment of more than 300 million euros to support the new aviation and unmanned vehicles: drones in other words, but not only, also the so-called flying taxis, ie. VTOL.
The project is supported by UK civil aviation, which sees drones as a fundamental tool to facilitate the rapid delivery of basic needs in the country: think vaccines, but also organs in case an urgent transplant is needed.
To ensure the safety of the new drone highway, the UK also plans to build several control towers dedicated to air traffic monitoring. They will be distributed over all 260 km of the Skyway.
