google will i accept Payment methods from third-party companies on the apps downloaded through the Play shop. It is one of the measures included in the Digital Markets Act, the ambitious EU regulation that redefines the rules that digital platforms must comply with. However, the DMA will only come into effect in two years from 2024, while it seems that Google wants to anticipate payments by third parties, at least.
This was announced by the same company, with a statement published on its official blog. Google has announced that it will soon launch a new program open to developers, who can – finally – propose alternative payment methods than the one imposed by default by the Google Play Store.
We will start step by step: we are sure that initially this capability will not be extended to all applications, but only to some specific categories of them. The big excluded are video games, which have to use the Google payment method for microtransactions and any subscriptions.
But for the developers, it’s only half a victory. By using third-party payment methods, companies will certainly have more control over user data, but will still be forced to pay for it committees from the Play Store, which are between 12% and 27%.
Paradoxically, as experts point out, that in some cases this solution has to be developed from scratch, perhaps with a financial partner, this solution can be even more expensive for developers. This Google knows very well of course.
