Around 05:09 am this Wednesday (03), a meteor entered Earth’s atmosphere and provided a massive flare in the skies, visible from several cities in the state of São Paulo and south of Minas Gerais. Some citizens shared images of those moments on the Internet.
In São Paulo, the flash has been recorded in the capital and at least eight other cities inland: Aguaí, Amparo, Campinas, Hortolândia, Pedreira, Rio Claro, São João da Boa Vista, and Sorocaba. In Minas Gerais, the object’s passage was captured by the Pico dos Dias Observatory in Brazópolis.
According to experts, the object looks like a bolide – In astronomy, the name given to a meteor that rubs against the atmosphere at very high speed, promoting an intense glow.
“Today we have a wonderful facility where cameras are installed in homes and other places, and so the recordings are more frequent,” said astronomer Júlio Lobo of the Jean Nicolini Municipal Observatory. G1.
According to him, the next step for astronomers will be to conduct an analysis to try to confirm which part of the sky the object came from.
