From the University of California comes a question about our solar system. Saturn has the rings and why Jupiter no? The two planets are different for the rings. Jupiter has them, but smaller in size. Perhaps they are small, due to the presence of larger satellites orbiting them, preventing the formation of larger rings. It seems that if Jupiter does not have its larger rings, it is due to its own moons. Researchers have shown that the numerous large moons block the formation of Jupiter’s rings.

Saturn and Uranus, the second and third largest planets in the solar system, are surrounded by rings and dust of various sizes. Saturn has them bigger, which is why scientists have wondered why Jupiter doesn’t have them. They also wondered why Uranus’ rings are much more visible than Jupiter, albeit lower than Saturn. Uranus appears to have fallen on its side after colliding with a celestial body that would then have formed the rings.

Stephen Kane and Zhexing created a PC simulation to explore the features of Jupiter and his 4 moons head. The computer model confirmed that the 4 moons are so large that they prevent the formation of stable rings. Among them Ganymede, the largest in the solar system, and Mercury. Jupiter can only have very faint rings and for limited periods of time. The size, structure and shape of these rings reveal the events that led to their creation.
