Fewer trees on the planet: more than 60% of forests have disappeared

It only took 60 years to get the Forest from 1.4 to 0.5 hectares per capita. In Italy and in the more developed countries, forests are increasing, but in Amazon the tropical forests I’m on my knees. More and more trees are needed to save the planet. Expanding and preserving greenery are priorities to fight the climate crisis, but not enough.

We know that nature is precious, but we continue to destroy it. It was researchers from the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, who led the study. They analyzed the variation in forest size per capita over time. The world surface has decreased by 81.7 million hectares (almost three times Italy). The study reads:

The space-time model of forest change supports the forest transition theory, with forest losses occurring mainly in low-income countries in the tropics and forest growth in higher-income countries far from the tropics. Our findings highlight the need to strengthen support to low-income countries, especially in the tropics, to improve their ability to minimize or eliminate forest losses. To counter the shift of forest losses to low-income countries in the tropics, higher-income countries need to reduce their dependence on imports of tropical forest-related products.
