The houses of the future can be built with brick obtained from used oil without the need for mortar. Waste oil is converted into cheap waste raw material. Australian researchers conducted this research to find a viable option for bricks used in construction.

It is about durable materials, replacing cement, iron and steel, which are responsible for more than 15% of CO2 emissions. Thus, science has obtained a light but strong polymer. The scholars started from dicyclopentadiene, sulfur and used rapeseed oil, a waste that may be used as an economic resource. It is abundant and cheap, to obtain a cheap finished stone that can then be reused as waste.

Such a building material has another advantage: the bricks can bond to each other thanks to the chemical bonds between sulfur atoms. Mortar and other adhesives become superfluous. This makes for more reducing environmental impact, also reducing the cost and difficulty of making and using stones. The resulting brick can be obtained only from used cooking oil, a mixture of sulfur and dicyclopentadiene. Both this and the sulfur are by-products that come from oil refining.

No more mortar is needed to bind them, because there is a amino catalyst. Here you get a durable and strong building material that will simplify everything. Now the team is taking steps to bring the product to market, they may be on sale soon.
