There are many options for writing, presenting or performing calculations on a computer. But they don’t cost that much. While Microsoft Word is the queen of text editing tools, just like Excel is in its field, there are many others that are almost equal to it. LibreOffice is without a doubt one of them.

LibreOffice stands out in two ways: it’s open source, so it’s constantly improved by volunteers and staff; and that it’s free, so there’s no need to pay for licenses or a monthly subscription.

Well, LibreOffice has just been upgraded to version 7.4 and is available for free download right away from its website. If you’re thinking about switching to the open source option, we leave you with the news that comes with the update:

  • Support for WebP images and EMZ/WMZ files
  • Help pages for the ScriptForge script library
  • Search field for extension manager
  • Performance and compatibility improvements
  • Better tracking of changes in footnote area
  • Edited listings show original numbers in changetrack
  • New typographic settings for hyphenation
  • Support for 16,384 columns in spreadsheets.
  • More options in the AutoSum dropdown widget
  • New menu item to search for sheet names
  • New Document Theme Support

According to its creators, LibreOffice offers the highest level of compatibility in the office suite market segment, with built-in support for OpenDocument Format (ODF) and excellent support for Microsoft Office files.

Microsoft files are still based on a proprietary format deprecated by ISO in 2008 rather than an ISO approved standard, so they hide a lot of artificial complexity.

This, according to those in charge of LibreOffice, causes processing problems with LibreOffice, which uses the true open standard format by default. Click here to download it.

The new LibreOffice 7.4 community features were developed by 147 contributors: 72% of the submitted code comes from 52 developers working for three TDF Advisory Board companies and 28% from 95 individual volunteers.

In addition, 528 volunteers provided localization in 158 languages. LibreOffice 7.4 Community is available in 120 different languages, more than any other free or proprietary software, and therefore can be used in their native language by more than 5.4 billion people worldwide.
