New Brazilian movie tells the story of a black boy who wants to go to Mars

“Politics, football and dreams” is about director Gabriel Martins’ “Mars One,” which tells the story of a lower-middle-class black family.

The plot relates to the story of Deivinho, played by Cícero Lucas, a boy who wants to become an astrophysicist and visit Mars. The boy’s father, the janitor Wellington (Carlos Francisco), dreams of his son becoming a football player.

Faced with personal dilemmas, his mother, Tércia (Rejane Faria), a day laborer, and the boy’s sister, Eunice (Camila Damião), seek independence. The narrative is about the complexity of family ties and the dreams and achievements of each.

Also, the film is set in the political landscape of Brazil in 2018, when a far-right president was elected and the mistrust of minorities hung in the air.

The film seems to be a pleasant surprise, tackling complex issues involving the entire family environment and introducing an interesting counterpoint between the son’s dream and the father’s dream.

Premiering at the 2022 Sundance Film Festval, the film won four awards at the Gramado Film Festival, Brazil’s flagship film, with a good critical response.

The film will be screened at the Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro from August 25 to 31.
