How does the DGT A1 permit, which allows you to drive a car under the age of 18, work?

The DGT (General Directorate of Traffic) tells us that there are 57,000 underage drivers in Spain. And this is not a mistake, this is a reality that shows the automotive culture that exists in our country.

This is because in Spain you can drive cars before you turn 18. If you are in a hurry, you can reach the age of majority with three years of motorcycle or moped driving experience.

There are currently four different administrative permits, two permits and two licenses that allow under 18s to drive. To obtain each of them, it is necessary to pass the corresponding test of psychophysical abilities. Requirements depending on the vehicle:

• Motorbike. Class A1 permit is the first motorcycle permit available. Permits driving motorcycles without a sidecar under three conditions: maximum cylinder capacity of 125 cc, maximum power of 15 hp. and specific power not more than 0.1 kW/kg.
• Moped. The age for obtaining a permit starts at 15, from AM. This allows driving mopeds up to 50cc. cm, with two and three wheels, as well as light ATVs. To be an AM permit holder as a minor, two exams must be passed: theory and practice.
• Agricultural. The Agricultural Vehicle License (LVA) is one of two licenses currently available in Spain and can be obtained from the age of 16. The LVA permits the driving of special self-propelled agricultural machines and trailers. Theoretical and practical exam.
• Defective. Another license available is LCM. This license can be obtained from the age of 14 and allows people with reduced mobility to drive vehicles. Although its owner must be at least 16 years old to carry passengers.

It can be said that children under 14 are prohibited from driving vehicles of any type on public roads that you need to register to distribute.

Therefore, up to this age, they can only carry pedal or electric bicycles, tricycles and quadricycles, scooters, electric or not, and other vehicles of this category, considered without an engine. And only on city roads and ordinary highways. And always wear a helmet, for your safety.
