Here’s what happens to your electric car’s battery when it dies in the middle of a ride

With the advent of electric vehicles, new and potential owners have many questions regarding the battery. If you’ve just bought an electric car and are wondering what happens when the battery dies, you’re not alone.

This is a serious problem, considering that no one wants to be left lying on the side of the road, especially when no one can come with a can of gasoline to help you (maybe there are solar panels in the trunk of the car, who knows).

Short answer: there’s really nothing to do. Your electric car will stop working and you will need roadside assistance or a tow truck, as is the case with a car that ran out of gas. Because it’s not the right decision.

Electric vehicles have two battery systems

Before we get started, it’s important to note that electric vehicles have two main battery systems. First, there is usually a regular 12 volt battery, just like any other gasoline car. to supply auxiliary devices.

This battery powers the dashboard, computers, lights, door locks, and other essentials. Our colleagues at Autobild answer a few questions about this.

Then comes the fat part. Electric vehicles have a significant high-voltage battery that powers the electric motors rather than the gasoline engine. These are two completely different systems.

Is it possible to start a discharged battery of an electric vehicle from an external source?

If the standard 12-volt battery system fails (because you left the lights on or opened the door), you could end up with a dead battery and the car won’t start. This is because a small 12-volt battery powers the computers and the “engine start” button.

You can run this battery in your electric car just like you would in any conventional gasoline powered car. However, and this is very important, you can’t “start” the big battery system that powers the rest of the car with another car.

What happens when an electric car runs out of battery?

The biggest concern for EV drivers is “range anxiety” and what to do when the battery dies, much like you run out of gas.

When the primary high-voltage battery in the electric vehicle is discharged, Does it shut down like a smartphone, stopping without warning? Not at all.

The battery in an electric car is dead, it’s like running out of gas. The vehicle will display a warning to the driver on the dashboard in advance. But instead of a low fuel warning, there will be a low battery warning.

The car will give you early warning when it’s low, allowing drivers to find a safe place to recharge. On some Tesla models, the center console screen even flashes to get your attention.

In addition, many vehicles will even tell you on the navigation system where a charging station is nearby.

For some reason, if you hit 0% and your electric car runs out of power, it all depends on the manufacturer. In most cases, the battery is still enough to get you a few more miles and hopefully make it to a charging station.

Some cars turn off the A/C to conserve battery, others limit power to drink more, and still others only allow the car to move at a certain speed. Either way, you will be in debt.

With time, the throttle will stop responding, you will lose acceleration and the car will come to a slow and safe stop. You will still have power steering and other safety features, so you need to try to quickly pull over and get out of danger.

Remember that the indicators, digital display, lights and power in the cabin will remain, as it is all powered by a conventional 12-volt battery.. You will only lose the energy of the electric motors and will not be able to continue moving forward.
