We don’t need to talk much about Ecce Homo BorgiaWell, this is a well-known story. The face of Christ, painted on the church wall in 1930, is classified as a minor work of little artistic value.

But being painted in oil on a dry wall, it quickly deteriorates, so a lady from a city with no artistic knowledge decided to “restore” it… and was renamed in a playful tone to Ecce Mono, or, as it is called abroad, Monkey Jesus.

Numerous experts have offered to restore it, including specialized technicians from the Community of Aragon. But after 10 years… it never occurs to anyone to touch the millimeter of the picture. It became a worldwide phenomenon that attracted 40,000 visitors per yearcreating wealth in the city.

The artistic disaster is now an economic miracle, but there are still people who want to restore it the way God intended, at least digitally.

On Reddit (where else), a user with the nickname GeometryBurger used artificial intelligence img2img to recover Ecce Homo Borja, with a bittersweet result.

Here you can see how it turned out. On the left is the original, painted by Elias Garcia Martinez in 1930. In the center is the “restoration” of Cecilia Jimenez. And on the right, the restoration made by AI:

AI img2img convert text to images. It’s free and you can use it from this website or by installing it on your computer from GitHub.

As you can see, AI is doing a good job restoration of divinity Ecce Homoalbeit with a completely different face. But he makes a serious mistake: interprets the parchment scroll as a hand. So, one is lime and the other is sand.

This is a good example to help us understand how much AI works: these are interpretations, and in many cases they are substitutes, they are not equivalent to reality. Something that also applies, for example, to the AI of mobile cameras.

Recently, artificial intelligence Google DALL-E has come into fashion, which is able to create incredible images from text and even enlarge and complement famous paintings.
