the devastating Drought this year obliges the California to find a solution to this problem. It was therefore decided to invest well over $20 million in a pilot project to cover some of the major water resources with massive solar panels.
The Nexus project includes the installation of: solar panels in the Turlock Irrigation District (TID) by the end of next year to cover the state’s waterways. The aim is torapid evaporation of waterthe resulting decrease in water supply and at the same time production renewable energy to be fed back into the local electricity grid.
According to a 2021 study, covering the roughly 4,000 miles of canals would reduce evaporation by about 63 billion gallons of water enough per year to meet the needs of approximately 2 million people. In addition, there will be enough panels to generate electricity equivalent to about one-sixth of the current installed capacity in the state.
Water is essential to everything we do and we will all have to work together to tackle the impact of drought on the entire West.
