Now that they’re trendy sirens, Before discussing whether they should be White or black, it’s important to remember what we seem to forget: they don’t exist. Arguing over whether a non-existent creature should be white or black is like being angry at the color of a unicorn’s fur. Therefore, it is better to put this dilemma aside and focus on the sirens that actually exist. Or at least in what attempts were made to make tourists believe in their existence.

And that’s what’s in Japan there is a long tradition mermaid worship. There are two creatures in his folklore that are far removed from the Disney Ariel, but they can be compared. One of them Amabiconsisting of a mermaid with a beak instead of a tail and three fins, and the other – ningyofish with a human head.

It is for this reason that they were very common in the past. stories about encounters with mermaids in Japan. Some were even caught and sold to tourists at exorbitant prices. Others were kept in temples where they were worshiped for their supposed healing power. But today we know that they were actually something like a Frankenstein built from monkeys and fish. Some fishermen made their fake mermaids to make good money from them. Later, they passed from hand to hand and were even kept in a mummified form, which is why some have survived to this day, becoming an invaluable treasure for scientists and historians.

Hiroshi Kinoshita, one of the members of the Okayama Folk Society, was reading an encyclopedia about fantastic creatures when a mermaid caught his attention. According to the book, the 30 cm long creature was caught between 1736 and 1741. The fisherman sold it to a wealthy family, who kept the mummified mermaid in a box along with a note with her story. Subsequently, no one really knows why, he ended up in the temple Okayama prefecture.

This fascinated by the folklore of his country decided to go to the temple in search of a siren, which for several years remained displayed on displaybut later it was removed so as not to spoil it.

With that done, he contacted scientists from Kurashiki University of Science and Arts try to find out the origin of the mysterious siren. They conducted two types of tests. On the one hand, they took computed tomography images for more information on the interior of the mummy. Then they collected DNA samplesin search of an animal or animals that have been confused with a mermaid.

So they saw that it was actually the result of a union monkey to fish. In addition, they added human hair and nails to give him a more typical mythological creature look. The scam was blatant, and that wasn’t a surprise either, as this wasn’t the first time this had happened.

Something similar happened with Mermaid by Feejee, a creature believed to have been caught in the 19th century that fishermen sold first to Dutch tourists and then to British merchants. It ended up in the United States, in a private collection. Phineas TaylorBarnumcircus impresario who inspired The Greatest Showman (2017).

When this siren was analyzed, like the siren of Okayama, it turned out that it is the result of sew the body of the orangutan to the tail of the salmon. In this case, the result was even more impressive – 91 centimeters in length. Almost a meter of deception, with which they tried to make believe that a mythological creature could actually exist. Now that we know it was nothing more than a scam, the dilemma we mentioned at the beginning is still useless. In fantasy, everything converges and the skin color of the sirens should be completely indifferent.
