The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the medical and food products regulatory agency in the United States, has issued a warning about the incidence of breast cancer associated with silicone implants.

In a statement released September 8 from the FDA, the agency reports that it is on the lookout for products before and after the marketing of the implants, following research and medical bulletins.

According to the reports received by the institution, unmonitored problems with silicone-filled flat and textured prostheses or saline solution may increase the chance of developing cancer.

Reports indicate that several types of lymphoma associated with squamous cell carcinoma and scar tissue produced around implants have been diagnosed.

even if non-recurring casesThe FDA warns that manufacturers should report the durability of dentures in their boxes, just as professionals should encourage periodic inspections.

Dentures, expiration dates and health risks

Contrary to popular belief, dentures have an expiration date and need to be inspected from time to time, so that the integrity of the material can be documented and the health of the operators can be guaranteed.

As described by Dr. Tommaso Addona, president of the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, told CNN in 2019: “Breast implants are not designed as lifetime devices, they have a lifespan that can range from seven to ten years depending on the implant and the patient.”

For this reason, the American Health Agency recommends that examinations be performed during the following periods: Five years or six years from the implant date and return every two years thereafter.

According to FDA research, health risks tend to increase as implant age increases. The ideal time for prosthesis replacement is about ten years, and this period may be longer if there are no complications.

The FDA said it will continue to look at cancer case reports and hopes to have more data on the actual possibilities and what factors may trigger the problem.
