UNTIL Naples the first is activated ‘smart’ tram and connected to the internet, thanks to 5G. It is the product of a collaboration between TIM, the Napolitan Mobility Company and Qualcomm. An experiment that should lead to the activation of other new-generation trams in Italy in the future.
The first tram connected to the internet is part of a larger cloud mobility project called Connected tram. The long-term objective foresees a transformation of Italian mobility, taking into account the new needs in terms of sustainability.
The tram will serve the Corso S. Giovanni – Teduccio in Municipio route, or line 4, for three weeks.
The tram offers, among other things, a service of infotainment up to 16:9 screens. On board the vehicle it is then possible to access an ad hoc created portal, simply by scanning a code QR with smartphone. The portal provides real-time information about the position of the weather, the points of interest encountered during the trip, as well as the latest news on current events and the weather. The tram has a free wifi network based on the 5G network.

The classic public transport experience is enhanced by a ‘smart’ service. It will be useful for the Neapolitans and perhaps even more useful for the tourists who flock to the capital. TIM’s cloud and 5G services can be used in a second phase to collect data from an innovative smart analytics system in the sensor sector and integrate it into the TIM Urban Genius platform for smart cities. In this way, it will be possible to provide information about the near and far context of each vehicle, collect passenger data such as attendance and ticketing, and integrate additional data and alerts from sensors into the urban context.
