Fires that affect all national biomes are mostly caused by humans. A study by Brazilian researchers shows that the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) analyzed data from 2011 to 2020.
In addition, the study, published in the international scientific journal PeerJ Life & Environment, makes projections for the future of the country’s forests based on information from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
In Brazil, some biomes, such as cerrado, pampas, and swamp, are more prone to natural fires than others. The researchers compared these two groups and saw little difference in the number of fires between them.
For experts, human action turned out to be the most important factor in the outbreak of fires that destroyed the country’s native vegetation. For example, fires were more common in the Atlantic Forest, which is not as conducive to the spread of fires as other regions, but covers most of Brazil’s residential areas.
In future projections, this is also the most threatened vegetation, as it loses its ability to adapt naturally to fires. An object of global concern, the Amazon is the most resilient biome.
