Positive test results for coronavirus infection rose from 3% to 17% in October, according to data released last week by the Todos pela Saúde Institute (ITpS).

This is another indication that a new wave of disease has begun in the country. Additionally, Rio de Janeiro recorded the first case of the Ômicron BQ.1 subvariant in the country this Saturday.

Data published by ITpS was gathered from a study of nearly 600,000 RT-PCR tests performed in national laboratories between the end of last year and last month. The average of positive results for the year was 3%.

In October, the average number of cases rose to 17%. The states most affected last week were Mato Grosso (from 3% to 18%), São Paulo (from 10% to 19%) and Rio de Janeiro (from 15% to 26%).

In over 90% of the samples collected, subvariants of the ômicron strain BA.4 and BA.5 were most abundant. Despite the increase, mass vaccination of Brazilians prevents hospitalizations and serious cases.

Despite this, admissions to the intensive care unit in São Paulo increased 46% during this period. In Rio de Janeiro, the first case of the BQ.1 subvariant was detected. In Asia, Europe and the United States, warnings have been issued about a new wave of the disease.
