NASA recently unveiled its optimism for conservation agreement with Russia on the International Space Station (ISS) until 2030. However, the director of the Russian Space Agency (Roskosmos), Dmitry RogozinIt didn’t take long for him to refute his words. At the same time, he pointed out that due to the sanctions imposed against Russia by Ukrainian war, they will not work with their international partners for longer than necessary. Now, a month after that first announcement, Rogozin is back in the fray to announce that while they haven’t sent notification to NASA yetthe decision has already been made: they are leaving the International Space Station.
Needless to say, they cannot leave overnight. Rogozin himself knows this. Your agreement has now been signed until 2024at best, they can refuse the extension requested by NASA until 2030. Even if they refuse, they will have to give a year’s notice. That is what they will do, according to the director of Roscosmos. They will remain on the International Space Station only if the sanctions against Russia are lifted. And since it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon, they think there’s nothing else to talk about.
Appeal to the Russian news agency TASS, have indicated that they will comply with all protocols and send advance notice to their partners. They won’t stay until 2030 anyway. Moreover, they do not even believe that it is possible if huge investment.
Russia’s plans for the International Space Station
There are currently three Russian cosmonauts on the International Space Station: Sergei Korsakov, Oleg Artemiev and Denis Matveev. As explained from IFLScienceRussia wants them not to work on joint experiments with their international partners, but to conduct them individually in Russian module.
However, the truth is that so far, despite all the more than palpable friction, both sides have complied so that work on the ISS does not suffer. In fact, two Russian cosmonauts and a NASA astronaut recently returned to Earth together in a maneuver that was the result of a collaboration between both space agencies.
There are currently three Russian cosmonauts on the International Space Station.
Perhaps for this reason, NASA believed that Russia would continue to work on the facilities. until 2030. Despite the fact that Roskosmos stopped deliveries of rocket engines and withdrew its personnel from European Space Station Kourou, in French Guiana. Also, despite the fact that they put more and more obstacles to access to their Soyuz missiles to launch new international missions into space.
Until then, we’ll have to wait. Russia made it clear that they are not required to make their discussions public and so the brief announcement they made is more than enough. The only ones who need to know the details are your international partners and they will be informed in due course. But the decision has already been made. The only place where the Ukrainian war seemed not to reach is already suffering in full from its consequences. Even in space one does not get rid of the problems caused by the stress of human beings.
