fertilityboth men and women, has declined significantly in recent years. stress from day to day, passive lifestyle, bad habits and exposure to certain substances, lead many people to the fact that their desire to become parents is impossible without the right help. In men, this manifests itself through decrease in the number and concentration of spermatozoaas well as their mobility. This is something that has been known for many years; but for some reason it continues to deteriorate at an alarming rate. Moreover, it is not only Europe, North America and Australiawhere most of the research is being done. We now know that other parts of the world with very different lifestyles suffer the same consequences.

This is the conclusion of a report recently published in Renewal of human reproduction an international team of scientists led by Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This team published the first report in 2017 precisely with data for Europe, North America and Australia. Now they not only saw that the situation in these places continued to deteriorate. They also confirmed that Central and South America, Africa and Asia sperm count is no less worrisome.

This logically has negative effects on fertility. But also with the general health of those affected, as it has been observed that they may have more chronic diseases, as well as a greater likelihood of developing testicular cancer. In addition, it has been observed that it is associated with a decrease in life expectancy. The problem is clear and, if appropriate measures are not taken, it may worsen significantly in the near future.

A dizzying drop in sperm count

This latest analysis, carried out with data from 53 countriesgather information received between 2011 and 2018. However, in a statement from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the authors note that in retrospect, the drop in sperm counts worldwide was more than 50% over the last 46 years. In addition, there were heavy losses concentration; since on average since 1973 it has fallen from 101 million per milliliter to 49 million per milliliter.

These are the most important indicators of male fertility, along with motility and morphology of spermatozoa. After all, having a large number of sperm cells is of little use if they are not able to swim properly to the egg or if their morphology makes them incapable of fertilization. But that’s not all. A drop in sperm count is also associated with a lot of health problems. Therefore, this is a parameter that everyone should pay attention to. Whether your goal is to have children or not.

On the other hand, this study shows that both sperm count and concentration decreased much faster than 2000s. This indicates that this is an ongoing problem that is getting worse.

What are the reasons?

This study only focuses on numbers that indicate a decrease in sperm count in about 1% per year. It does not analyze possible causes. However, its authors have several hypotheses.

And the fact is that although adult exposure to certain substances is usually indicated, they believe that problems could have arisen much earlier, during embryonic development. They support this hypothesis in previous research, which indicates that certain lifestyles as well as exposure to toxic substances during pregnancymay affect the development fetal genital tract. Therefore, from the very beginning of life, condemnation of infertility and numerous health problems will begin.

In fact, given their results, the authors of the study note that their work is like a canary in a mine. They report what will happen if action is not taken in time. In just a decade, we could be sooner severe fertility problemsaccompanied by a possible increase in the incidence of certain chronic diseases. And this will happen all over the world, both in the most developed countries and in the rest. The latter already have enough problems to deal with. At the very least, we should look at how to remove it from the list.
