On Reddit, a modder is developing a ‘demake’ of Elden Ring for the Game Boy. From the first teaser it can be concluded that the maker has the essential elements of the game. carried by spirits including dodging attacks and fighting huge monsters. The trailer shows the fall of one of the first settings, the Chapel of Expectation.
For the retro transformation of Elden Ring, developer Shintendo uses the game program GB Studio 3.0, a free development program for retro games. Projects developed through the open source program can be made compatible with the Game Boy, among other things.
In an interview with Polygon, Shintendo says that the biggest limitation (besides the 8-bit architecture) is the cartridge that needs to be crammed into the game. Elden Ring is a massive game, even by modern standards. Even an 8-bit approach to The Lands Between requires a huge amount of storage. After recreating the entire Limgrave, Shintendo decides whether to make the rest of Elden Ring a Game Boy game as well.
