Researchers from Universitè de Montrèal and McGill University have discovered a way to reprogram cell metabolism delay aging. This process is called aging of the cells. Basically, it is an enzyme complex. Its name is Htc and it consists of three enzymes (pyruvate carboxylase, malate dehydrogenase 1 and malic acid enzyme 1).

The structure protects cells againsthypoxia (lack of oxygen that can lead to death). HTC remained hidden until researchers discovered it in samples from a mouse model of prostate cancer. Also in tissue samples from the cancerous prostate. Experts found the HTC in the study of chemical processes of cellular metabolism.

However, the enigmatic complex has the special feature that it not only anti-aging, but is also active against some forms of aging cancer.

Most interestingly, inhibiting these enzymes stopped the growth of prostate cancer cells – results that suggested that HTC could indeed become a key element in developing new anti-tumor therapies.

In the future, the first step will be to generate a detailed, high-resolution structure of the enzyme complex. The goal is to create drugs able to modulate functionality.
