Electronic Arts will test crossplay for FIFA 22 with an update that should be released ‘soon’. Players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Google Stadia can choose to enable crossplay. This way, anyone on the respective consoles/platforms can play against and against each other. For players who do not choose the option, nothing changes.
Crossplay is only available in Online Seasons and Online Friendships game modes during testing. According to EA, only a few game modes are available during testing to mitigate potential cross-play issues. Then crossplay should come out for other modes as well. EA has yet to reveal which one it is.
Although limited in modes, the cross-play feature makes it possible to play together with your friends on different platforms. For now, someone with an Xbox console cannot play with someone using a PlayStation, which is still very common in online gaming. Cross-play in itself is nothing new, but many developers (and console owners) still prefer to segment players by platform.
In the future, FIFA is reportedly coming to PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions (whether under a brand new name or not). In this case, EA opens the doors to a huge new audience, and an accessibility feature like crossplay is undoubtedly welcome.
