The Zaporizhzhia (Zaporizhia) nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine was rocked by about 12 explosions between Saturday night (19) and Sunday morning (20) local time. Information obtained from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The facility is currently under Russian control.
According to the IAEA, the explosions damaged some buildings, systems and equipment, but there is no risk of a nuclear explosion. The agency reported no casualties.
Rafael Grossi, director general of the IAEA, said: “There have been explosions at the site of this important nuclear power plant and this is absolutely unacceptable. Whoever is behind this must stop immediately. As I have said over and over, you are playing with fire!”
It is not yet known who was responsible for the attack. Russia blames Ukrainian forces for the explosions; Ukraine says the Russians are responsible.
