Last Monday (28), car company Rolls Roycein partnership with, EasyJet Airlineswas the harbinger of a new turning point in aviation. The companies conducted the first ground test of a modern aircraft engine powered by green hydrogen. — the goal is to show that hydrogen can be a zero-carbon solution in the aerospace industry.

At one of the MoD Boscombe Down military facilities in the UK, professionals from Rolls-Royce and EasyJet conducted outdoor tests using an early concept prototype. The engine uses a hydrogen fuel made with renewable energy from wind and tides, supplied by the European Marine Energy Center (EMEC).

For the demonstration, Rolls-Royce’s AE 2100-A engine was chosen to be converted to green, carbonless hydrogen – the engine is often used in military, regional and cargo aircraft. The fuel was produced using wind and tidal energy at EMEC facilities on the islands of Orkney (Scotland).

“The success of this hydrogen test is an exciting milestone. We only announced our partnership with easyJet in July, and we are off to an incredible start with this historic achievement,” said Grazia Vittadini, CTO of Rolls-Royce. “We are pushing the boundaries to explore the zero-carbon possibilities of hydrogen that could help reshape the future of flight,” he adds.

With the test successful, the companies are planning further demonstrations with more powerful engines, such as the Pearl 15 jet engine, which is part of the Race to Zero campaign aimed at reducing fuel use to zero. it emits carbon.
