NASA has captured a black hole that swallows a star drifting through space until it is pulled by its strong gravitational field. HE IS black hole It’s about 10 million times larger than our sun (that’s the difference between a bowling ball and the Titanic, by comparison) and is located at the center of another galaxy, 250 million light-years from Earth.

As the star was engulfed, its material, mostly hot gas, moved toward the core of the singularity, forming a bright disk. The process led to a corona, an ultra-hot structure in the form of a cloud of plasma (gas atoms that have had their electrons stripped) seen just above the black hole.

The observation could help scientists better understand the phenomenon’s feeding behavior, as well as know what happens to the material that one of these giants captures before it is swallowed whole. The process that leads to the destruction of stars by the forces of a black hole, called the “tidal refraction event,” is considered one of the most violent events in the Universe.

Such events create radiation light shows by emitting wavelengths across nearly the entire electromagnetic spectrum. A glimpse was possible thanks to the proximity of several space telescopes and work at ground stations. The main instruments and areas capturing the intense emission of X-rays include the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescopic Array (NuSTAR) satellite and the Palomar Observatory (located in California).

The observed phenomenon led to a study published in the scientific journal. Astrophysical Journal. The study provided unprecedented insight into corona formation and evolution, which has yet to help astronomers unravel the role a black hole plays in manipulating the material around its gravity.
