Western Digital has expanded its data center hard drive lineup with the Ultrastar DC HC570 and HC670. Thanks to the combination of ten magnetic disks, energy-assisted vertical magnetic recording (epmr) and the Optinand cache, the manufacturer was able to further increase the capacity to 22 and 26 TB.
The HC570 has ten CMR plates of 2.2TB each, while the HC670 is equipped with ten Ultrasmr drives of 2.6TB each. In his own words, the HC670’s 18% increased capacity is due to this self-developed form of SMR combined with custom firmware. So far, WD is the only one to announce an HDD with such a capacity that is expected to hit the 30TB mark in the next few years.
While the company is currently sampling Ultrastar models to major partners, there are plans for 22TB consumer models as well. Like the Ultrastar series, the WD Purple Pro, Red Pro and Gold variants are expected to be released in the summer.
