New research indicates that trans people are not represented as such in clinical trials, so they may have worst medical care. This is not really surprising. It used to be with women. majority clinical trials conducted only with men, so the correct doses and side effects that may occur with women they were not taken into account. As a result, it was much easier for them to survive an overdose or any unwanted injury. Today the same is happening with black peoplewhich are not taken into account in some studies. We are all the same, but they have genetic differences or differences due to skin color, which must be taken into account.
Now these studies do not consider transgender people, although most researchers may not do so intentionally. This, as explained in the just published study, is due to the fact that gender and gender interchangeably, as if it were a single concept. That is, when participants are included in a clinical trial, they are only asked about one of the two, as if they were synonyms.
For example, a trans man may say that he is a man because it is true. But if you do not indicate that you are a trans man, your set of chromosomes or that you may, for example, have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than other men. These are the details that need to be considered so that we all have our full attention. And in this case, it’s based on something as simple as adding another question to the polls.
Sex is not the same as sex
As the authors of the study explain in a statement, the main problem with this bias is that the terms “sex” and “gender” are used interchangeably. However, the first has a more biological component, and the second – a social one. Therefore, both should be taken into account.
When talking about sex, they mean the one that is assigned on the basis of chromosomes. That is, if you have XY sex chromosomes assigned as male and if they XXlike a woman. As for gender, it is rather a social construct that depends on self-name from every person. A person with a male chromosomal sex can be female and vice versa.
Therefore, both questions should be asked. Transgender or cisgender persons must indicate also this and thus many problems could have been avoided. If not, the authors of the study note that two-step naming could also be used. That is, ask the participants about their current gender and their assigned gender at birth.
Why are transgender people discriminated against?
To conduct this study, the authors at the University of Michigan analyzed data from Biobank UKwhich includes genetic material and health information from 487,600 people the specified country. They chose this database because it collects information about each participant’s chromosomal gender, as well as what gender they self-reported. So they discovered that there is 200 people in which there were disagreements in both terms.
In a number of cases, the reason for this discrepancy could not be established, but in 70% of cases it was possible. This may be due to two reasons: either the diagnosis intersex traits or to gender dysphoria. The first refers to the presence of sexual characteristics that do not correspond to one chromosomal sex. For example, they could develop breasts like a woman and a penis. Or, for example, male genitalia and female chromosomes.
In terms of gender dysphoria, it is a diagnosis used to establish that someone is transgender. Some countries, such as Spain, have removed the requirement for this diagnosis because it is not a psychological disorder. But in many other places it is and has been used, so it serves to establish why there is a discrepancy between gender and sex.
This shows that there is a high enough proportion of transgender people to consider in medical research and clinical trials. So they will get healthcare better. Prejudice against women has already been removed, and attempts are being made to include more of ethnic origin. We must not leave transgender people behind. They have suffered and are suffering enough to receive the worst medical care, which I hope will be a mere oversight.
