Movie Snow Society Juan Antonio Bayona, was a resounding success. Not only is it one of the most watched films in Netflix history, but it also received two nominations for the 2024 Oscars, making it a major milestone in Spanish cinema. But beyond the undoubted technical achievements, the film is an inspired story of physical and spiritual feat. All from the point of view of survivors of the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in 1972.

A tragedy that shook the world

As we recall, the crash of La Fuerza Uruguaya Flight 571 left 29 survivors of the original 45 passengers isolated in the middle of the Andes mountain range. The original group lasted two weeks and then was destroyed by an avalanche. After 72 days in the worst conditions, in which they even resorted to cannibalism with the corpses of the dead, only 16 were saved.

The film “The Snow Society” pays tribute to both the dead and the survivors. A detail that brought the film significant success and even resonated at the Academy Awards.
