After spending the entire 2000s talking about Avatar, Canadian director James Cameron decided to release it in 2009. According to the producer, his shooting lasted more than 10 years, because the film needs technology that has not yet been invented.

Despite huge expectations, as we mentioned earlier in the subtitle, the film did very well in theaters: $2,847 million.. Considering the number, the same cannot be said simply “it worked very well”, since we are talking about the highest grossing film in history.

But that fact was not what prompted James Cameron and the production company to develop several sequels. Specifically, four more to create a pentalogy that will hit theaters in the 1920s (although the original idea was between 2020 and 2025).

And the time reduction is welcome, as a premiere every 11 years would be inconsistent with the life expectancy of many fans of the original film. The idea behind Avatar: Sense of Water is to release Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 in 2024, 2026 and 2028 respectively.

The idea of a multi-part story was always the idea of a director who didn’t want to release a sequel after a sequel without end. Cameron recently spoke to Empire magazine to explain how he thought about the Avatar sequels.

I don’t want to limit myself to making one film, another and a third. I want to tell a big story. Imagine if there was a series of novels like The Lord of the Rings and we adapted them.“, James Cameron explains his vision of the Avatar.

As we said, this was a monumental task for the director, as there are plans for three more sequels after El Camino del Agua opens in December. culminating in the untitled Avatar 5 movie in 2028.

Also, The franchise shares several other similarities with the Peter Jackson trilogy: Avatar sequels are back-to-back in a lengthy filming that began in 2017. Avatar 3 is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2024.

This is a drastic change, as more than ten years have passed since the original film was released. Nonetheless, Pandora fans won’t have to wait long because Avatar 2 is set to release on December 16, 2022.
