Originally released in 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, receiving three Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score and Music. The film successfully pushed and launched the Star Trek franchise beyond the original television series, despite being rushed to theaters with incomplete special effects and forced editing choices.

In 2001, director Robert Wise returned to work on the film, refining the editing and improving the visual effects. His updated rendering was released on DVD in standard definition and enjoyed by fans, but was never available in higher definition until now. Carefully edited and restored by Robert Wise’s two original collaborators, producer David C. Fein and Wise’s restoration supervisor and assistant Mike Matessino, the film has been remastered in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and featuring a new Dolby Atmos ® soundtrack * for more immersive audio. Fein and Matessino assembled a team of special effects experts, led by visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, and used the extensive resources in the Paramount archives to recreate the effects not only in HD, but also in Ultra HD. After more than six months of painstaking work, the remastered film has picture and sound quality like never before, while staying true to Robert Wise’s original design.
