That the sandman became a hit on Netflix, Neil Gaiman was asked to share various details and anecdotes about the comic that kick-started the project. And one of the most interesting revelations from Gaiman is the lack of presence of jokerwhich was originally included in the comic.

This is what the writer said:

The DC Comics continuity annoyed me, and one example was the fact that at the beginning of the fifth book, Destiny on the run from Arkham had to meet the Joker. I had written a whole series with Joker in it, and at one point I got a call that the character had fallen into the river of Gotham and that he was considered dead at the time. And I said it was Joker, and he couldn’t be dead. They told me he wasn’t dead, but I would have to insert another character at that point.

Recall that the comic series was published between 1988 and 1996. The Sandman is a rich interweaving of myth and dark fantasy full of strong characters that follow the adventures of Dream. The Netflix TV series is divided into ten chapters. Development and executive production are in the hands of Gaiman, flanked by showrunner Allan Heinberg and David S. Goyer.
