What really made Rhaenyra Targaryen go against her half-brother Aegon II? The tipping point that brought all of Westeros into all-out battle? The simple answer is the right to inherit the Iron Throne. However, the season finale Dragon Houseavailable now on HBO Max showed that what triggered the significant tragedy was almost a random event.

The death of Luceris Velaryon was the main reason why the Dragonstone court took the first step in hostilities. It all happened after a confrontation between the queen’s son and Aymond Targaryen. However, while this may seem like a hostile act of outright provocation, the script chose to give the event an air of accidental tragedy. Which, in fact, changes the original plot and reconfigures the perception of the future confrontation between the factions of the Royal House.

After all, this was not a mean or cruel decision on Aymond’s part, despite his anger against Rhaenyra’s children. In reality, Lucenis died when her dragon Arrax spat fire at the fearsome Vagar, and Vagar chased after her. An almost instinctive reaction between two mythical beasts that their riders could do little to stop. Finally, Aymond’s mount lunged at Luceris and devoured him in a vicious and brutal scene.

The event that triggered the civil war in Dragon House

In the final episode of the prequel to Game of Thrones, Dragon House, answers to basic questions. But, in particular, its ending shows the key incident that made Rhaenyra Targaryen decide to attack. Something that she avoided for most of the chapter and that even brought her into a confrontation with her husband, Daemon Targaryen.

Luceris Velarion, sent to Storm’s End, home to the Baratheons, flew Arrax to the fortress. His mission was to be his mother’s messenger and announce the claims he would make against Aegon II. Prior to this, the Baratheons had been loyal to the heiress of Viserys I. Twenty years ago, Lord Boremund knelt before the decision of the monarch on the succession to the throne. But Borros, his successor, was a mystery to Rhaenyra. So, in a majestic gesture, he decided to send Lucenis to reminisce about old agreements.

Besides, once the prince reached Storm’s End, he discovered that Aymond had crossed the air long before. Like an advertisement, the huge and terrifying figure of Vagar loomed over the fortress in Dragon House. However, Luceris demanded an audience and conveyed her mother’s words to Borros. The Baratheon heir then explained that Aegon II had already made a “tempting” proposal that included a marriage bond. That’s when the scene shows Aymond in the room, listening intently.

But Aymond continues to provoke him, insisting that he “should give him an eye” as retribution for the one he lost as a child.

Borros Baratheon, furious, pushes both young men out of the throne room. Outside, in the midst of the storm, Lucenis runs to sit on Arrax’s back. But Vagar is no more. As he flies away, he realizes that Aymond has ambushed him.
