Project Q, Sony’s new handheld console, is now called the PlayStation Portal and has a confirmed price.

The device relies on cloud games but unlike other members of the genre, as its main focus is on the use of Remote Play, a technology that already allowed any game installed on the console to be streamed to devices such as mobile phones, tablets or computers. And now the Japanese have confirmed its official name: game console portal.

According to the Asian firm, PlayStation Portal is not the console itself, but a “remote player”. And although we already knew the main characteristics of this gadget When it was announced, an important piece of information was missing: the price. Fortunately, Sony made it official this time.

Together with the PlayStation Portal, Sony promises to bring the most important features of the PS5 and the DualSense controller in a compact form factor. As we said at the beginning, the device cannot run games, so its range of operation is quite limited. And probably this affected the sale price to the general public.

The PlayStation Portal features an 8-inch Full HD (1080p) LCD screen at 60 frames per second. The device features a DualSense PS5 based controller and inherits several of its best-known features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. In addition, it offers a traditional 3.5mm jack for wired headphones.

Still no details about the battery capacity and its potential autonomy. In fact, this is something that has already caused controversy in the previous case. A few days after Sony officially unveiled Project Q, rumors surfaced that it would only last up to 4 hours on a single charge. A disappointing statistic given that all of the game’s processing will be done on the PS5 and not the PlayStation portal.

It is worth mentioning, moreover, that PlayStation Portal will be limited to launching games installed on the PlayStation 5.. Sony has confirmed that the device does not support PS5 game streaming with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. But it will also not be possible to use it with PlayStation VR or PlayStation VR2 games. Even with those games that require additional peripherals such as DualShock 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge controls.

Price and availability

Those who want to get their hands on the PlayStation Portal will have to fork out. $199.99, 199.99 British pounds, 219.99 euros or 29,980 yen., depending on the market they are in. Unfortunately, there is no confirmed release date yet.
