On August 22, EA released “Immortals of Aveum”, the long-awaited first-person shooter with magic-based combat.Set in a war-ravaged world. Developed by Ascendant Studios, this game combines rich knowledge with intense combat, immersing users in a daring adventure.
Players take on the role of Jak, played by the hero Darren Barnett, who displays magical abilities and becomes involved in humanity’s endless battle for control of magic.
Under the tutelage of Grand Magnus Kirkan, played by Gina Torres, Jak joins the elite war mages of the Order of the Immortals to fight to end Everwar, a worldwide conflict between the nations of Lucium and Rasharn.
Known as Triarch Magnus, Jak is a warmage with the ability to use all three colors of magic. Combat is fast, fluid and fun, thanks to the explosive effects of Red Magic, the fast bursts of Green, and the long-range accuracy of Blue. Thanks to this combat system, a large number of attacks and abilities make it a very dynamic game, and it is clear that a lot of effort went into its development. Players can combine different spells with each other to find the right strategy to defeat their enemies.
The world of Aveum is presented as a place that existed long before Jak’s story. Ascendant Studios has created a world full of stories and magic that spans the globe, from bustling settlements to the furthest depths.
From the very beginning of development, the team at Ascendant Studios wanted “Immortals of Aveum” to be a truly next-gen experience on a technical level. This led them to release one of their first AAA games on Unreal Engine 5.1; this engine gives them the tools and technology they need to do something they think is truly special and what they hope players will do too.
Deputy Art Director Julia Lichtblau shared her perspective on the visual and artistic design of the game in an interview with EL TIEMPO.
“We always knew that ‘Immortals of the Aveum’ would be a fusion of the old and the new with traditional fantasy ideas. For example, besides the stone castles, we also have huge buildings, huge towers carved by magic. You see huge towers.”
Lichtblau also highlighted the challenges of creating the game’s art, saying: “We were always trying to add an extra level of detail and complexity. For example, our main spells are three colors: red, green, and blue. While it’s simple, we wanted it for people with color blindness through certain figures. to make it more interesting and accessible”.
Talking about the different environments in the game, Lichtblau excitedly said: “We have visited many kingdoms in this universe. There are five kingdoms in Aveum and each one really has a different biome. For example, you visit Calfus, an allied kingdom with him. Lucia. Mountainous and snowy. “We also visited the Kingdom of Oramen, which suffered a magical disaster in the past. Lucia is an idyllic world full of beautiful trees and rolling hills.”
All these works described by Lichtblau result in a game that offers an impressive graphic experience.
As for the story, it draws you in from the very first moment and it is impossible not to notice some memories of “Mirror’s Edge” in the first minutes of the game. However, not everything is perfect. Sometimes the character movement can be a bit slow and hard. Despite that, “Immortals of Aveum” is definitely a title worth exploring.
Bret Robbins, Game Director and CEO of Ascendant Studios, previously expressed his excitement about the game’s release: “I’m incredibly excited to be showing ‘Immortals of Aveum’ to the world. It’s been a five-year journey for us at Ascendant, and I’m with the team. and I’m proud of their commitment to creating something great.”
Since its release, “Immortals of Aveum” has been available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC via the EA app, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
