Baidu has opened up access to its generative AI (artificial intelligence)-based chatbot Ernie Bot for users, Reuters reports citing a company statement. Previously, the bot was available only to those users who requested and received official access codes.
As Baidu points out, the bot can be installed on the company’s official website. In addition to Baidu, four other Chinese tech companies have launched their chatbots to a wide audience, including the SenseTime Group.
Under Chinese law, Reuters clarifies, manufacturers must obtain government permission before the widespread release of any artificial intelligence-based products. Therefore, the programs, including Ernie Bot, became available to consumers much later than their official release.
Previously, China adopted various regulations regulating the activities of generative AI service providers. In particular, these services should reflect the fundamental values of socialism and not allow calls to undermine state power.
Baidu introduced its Ernie Bot in March 2023. In April, the service filed a lawsuit against the US company Apple. The plaintiff claimed that fake apps imitating Ernie’s work appeared on the AppStore.
