After the release of the new gameplay trailer for Return to Monkey Islandmany historical fans of the series have flocked to social networks and the most popular video game forums to express their own opinions disappointment with the new graphic style of the game. Even on Ron Gilbert’s blog, there have been controversies and personal insults, so much so that the famous author was forced to close the comments, deciding to stop posting about the game

I’m closing the comments,” Ron Gilbert wrote on his personal blog “Grumpy Gamer”. People are just getting mean and I’ve found myself having to cancel some personal attacks. It’s a fantastic game and everyone on the team is very proud of it .Play it or don’t play it don’t ruin it for everyone I will no longer post about the game, the joy of sharing has diminished me.

The question essentially revolves around the stark aesthetic differences that the new chapter of the saga presents compared to the first historical installments. Many would have liked to see a return to the origins with pixel art graphics that recall the style of the canonical chapters. However, Return to Monkey Island’s graphical style presented itself as: very different of what was supposed and this choice clearly did not sit well with many.

The controversy had actually already taken hold by the time of the release of the first teaser trailerwith Ron Gilbert who had tried to defend the team’s artistic choices but ended up soured with the arrival of the new trailer for the Nintendo Direct Mini, to the point where it led to personal attacks on Ron Gilbert himself.
