The PlayStation 2 came out in 2000 and was another great product from Sony. However, in its early days, As ‘Xataka’ recalls, the Japanese government feared that the console would be exported and used militarily by foreign enemies.

The PlayStation 2 included a graphics processor called the Emotion Engine and a DVD drive, making it a very powerful and innovative console. But this technology, in the eyes of the Japanese government, posed a threat. And they soon tried to prevent it from being exported.

Authorities in Japan discovered that the Emotion Engine could render images in three dimensions (something revolutionary for the time). Although the chip was for gaming, it could be used militarily, for example, in missile guidance systems.

Japan feared that its xenophobes would use Japanese technology against it. Because it already happened to them on a North Korean submarine with Japanese components. That’s why Japan forced users in other countries to obtain a special export permit in order to get the PS2.

Sony reached an agreement with the government to export the PS2, but Libya, Iran, Iraq and North Korea were excluded from acquiring the console. In any case, there was a risk that someone would try to create a supercomputer with a PS2 system.

And so it happened. In 2002, two years after the PS2 was released in Japan, the US National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) created a blueprint for a console-based supercomputer. However, the life of the machine was very short.

But when the PS3 came out, the United States purchased 1,760 consoles to build the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) supercomputer; equipment was able to analyze satellite images.
