Rosatom experts have developed a new hydrogen production unit that combines the advantages of various industrial technologies and eliminates their disadvantages. This message was published by the press service of TVEL A.Ş., a part of Rosatom.

Specialists of NPO Centrotech LLC, part of TVEL, have created an experimental electrolysis plant with a capacity of 50 Nm3/h (the measure of the gaseous amount of a substance, the volume of one cubic meter under standard conditions), using a unique Russian technology. They have also successfully completed the first phase of testing this setup.

The unit works on the basis of water electrolysis technology using a special matrix. It combines the advantages of common industrial technologies – alkaline and membrane electrolysis – but at the same time is devoid of disadvantages. Thanks to the selected technological solutions, the electrolysis plant has low energy consumption (not more than 4 kWh per cubic meter of hydrogen produced), high performance and safe operation.

It is also worth noting that 3D printing is used in the production of some parts of electrolysis batteries, which makes it possible to reduce their weight and speed up the production process.

TVEL is implementing a major investment project to establish the production of electrolysis equipment in the city of Novouralsk. This project is part of the combined strategy for the development of hydrogen energy in Russia and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The electrolysis facilities developed by Rosatom will currently be used in pilot projects such as the creation of a hydrogen infrastructure on Sakhalin Island, hydrogen production at Kola NPP and a filling complex for hydrogen fuel cell trains in Sakhalin.
