Microsoft wants to make it easier for users to download apps when they buy a new PC, and is bringing a feature to Windows 11 that has been on iOS, macOS, iPadOS, and Android for years: the ability to restore applications previously installed on other devices in a much faster way.

A new feature coming soon to the Microsoft Store will allow users to access the Library section, where all previously installed applications on other computers will be accumulated. From there, it will be possible to choose between restoring all applications previously installed on another PC, or restoring only some of them. The Microsoft Store for Windows 11 will also categorize apps to make it easier to find.

Currently Windows 11 App Store does not include a similar option. So if users get a new device and want to download the apps that were on their old PC, they have to manually search for them.

This, according to Giorgio Sardo, CEO of the Microsoft Store, not only made it difficult and slow to migrate from a new Windows 11 PC. It also harms the developer, because manual download can make the user forget about this application. Sardo essentially says that this feature, in addition to “facilitating the transition of customers to their new PCs quickly and seamlessly,” “will help developers retain their customers without having to remind them to redownload their application.”

Windows 11 will soon bring something that Apple and Google have been offering for years.

Keep in mind that the Windows 11 feature may take some time to reach all users. It will be available, first of all, during the testing phase for those users who are registered in the Windows Insider program.

The ability to restore applications when changing hardware, as we already mentioned, it has been available for some time on various Apple and Google operating systems.. macOS, for example, includes the ability to redownload apps previously installed on other devices through the App Store in the user’s tab. The same feature is available on iOS and iPadOS. Again, in the user’s tab and, in this case, in the “Purchases” section. Android, Google’s operating system, also includes a similar feature on Google Play.

In the meantime, Microsoft is also working on new features for Windows 11. Among them is the ability to activate third-party widgets.
