The journal Science published a sensational study Wednesday describing a rare and surprising event. In October 2022, MASTER spherical mesh telescopes recorded the most powerful gamma-ray burst in history, called GRB 221009A. This explosion occurred billions of years ago as a result of the collapse of a massive star.

Gamma ray bursts are very powerful bursts of electromagnetic energy in our universe. When a star is on the verge of becoming a black hole, it emits a narrow beam that is a gamma-ray burst. These black holes form in the far reaches of the universe, which is about 14 billion years old.

Of all gamma-ray bursts, GRB 221009A is the brightest and most powerful burst ever observed by scientists. Its energy is so great that it surpasses all previous gamma-ray bursts recorded in 55 years of research. We can say that it is equivalent to the explosion of five Suns in a few seconds.

This October gamma-ray burst was also one of the closest that scientists have been able to determine the distance. Such events only occur once in a thousand years, so the GRB 221009A is truly a unique find.
