Roskomnadzor plans to restrict foreign vulnerability scanners’ access to the Russian Internet. That is, it will prohibit foreign hackers from checking RuNet for security vulnerabilities so that they cannot use this information. This is part of the authorities’ plan to improve the security of Russia’s information infrastructure. The plan includes three major tasks defined by members of the Information Security Scientific and Technical Council.
The plan was developed within the framework of the Scientific and Technical Council organized by Roskomnadzor on the basis of the Main Radio Frequency Center. Roskomnadzor reported that the council has identified three areas of work to strengthen the security of Russia’s information infrastructure. However, he did not reveal who was on the board of directors. Each of the tasks must be completed in the current year.
Fighting security vulnerabilities
One of his areas of study concerns the limitation of vulnerability scanning of Russian systems and services. Roskomnadzor noted that more than 10 foreign services regularly search for “holes” in Runet. The agency acknowledged that Russian information systems often have security vulnerabilities that could lead to the leakage of personal data. To solve this problem, Roskomnadzor plans to create a Russian vulnerability scanning system.
DDoS protection,
Another task is to protect against DDoS attacks, which are gaining momentum on the Russian Internet. Roskomnadzor noted that the number and strength of DDoS attacks in Runet has increased significantly, and their duration has increased tenfold. To counter this, it is planned to create a national DDoS protection system.
Control over IP addresses
The third task is to create a Russian system for verifying the country of origin of network addresses. Roskomnadzor says that there is no such system at the moment or that it cannot provide accurate information about Russian regions. To ensure the correct operation of Russian information resources and access to them, it is planned to create such a system in Russia.
